ORFEUS | seismological waveform data services

ORFEUS (Observatories and Research Facilities for European Seismology), founded in 1987, is the non-profit foundation that coordinates digital, broadband seismology in the European-Mediterranean area. ORFEUS coordinates archiving of, and access to, earthquake waveform data from seismic stations in the European Mediterranean region through EIDA (European Integrated waveform Data Archive) in Europe.


Current activity in the EPOS-IP project:

EIDA is the distributed data center to (a) securely archive seismic waveform data and metadata gathered by European research infrastructures, and (b) to provide transparent access to the archives by the geosciences research communities. EIDA nodes collect and archive data from seismic networks deploying broad-band sensors, short period sensors, accelerometers, infrasound sensors, and other geophysical instruments.

Within EPOS, EIDA works on the development and implementation of tools and services to provide transparent access to seismological waveform data and associated metadata across the EIDA nodes:

  • development of the next generation (NG) software architecture for the European Integrated (seismological) Data Archive EIDA, making full use of current standards for web services as used by global organizations (FDSN/IASPEI), and including a quality service and a mediator service. The NG architecture will also cover the specific needs of ocean bottom station (OBS) data and other seismological data in EPOS.
  • development and implementation of EIDA compliant services for strong motion data products and acceleration data, including the extension of station metadata content. Integrate the collection of structural monitoring arrays into EIDA. RRSM (Rapid Raw Strong Motion) and ESM (Engineering Strong Motion) are systems to provide strong motion data and engineering parameters. The EIDA StationBook is the service to serve and maintain station metadata.
  • data services and coordination for mobile pools and OBS, EIDA integration of mobile networks and OBS seismological waveforms, covering data and metadata standards: develop policies and implement mechanisms for coordination of transnational access and multinational experiments at available pools of OBS and mobile seismic stations.
