EUROPEAN RESEARCH INFRASTRUCTURE ON SOLID EARTH

EMSC | seismological products services

EMSC (European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre), founded in 1975, is the European organization to establish and operate a system for rapid determination of the European and Mediterranean earthquake epicentres (location of major earthquakes within a delay of approximately one hour). The EMSC, acting as the central authority, is responsible for transmitting these results immediately to the appropriate international authorities and to the members in order to meet the needs of protection of society, scientific progress and general information.

Current activity in the EPOS-IP project:

Within EPOS, EMSC further develops, expands and integrates EPOS compliant services to access seismological products provided by EMSC, its partner institutions, and the scientific community, building upon the existing infrastructures at EMSC and its partners:

  • Implementing a common collection and development platform for seismological products (lead EMSC): the platform will collect and provide access to new products of scientific interest (authoritative locations and magnitudes, moment-‐tensor, shaking and damage maps, seismic source models, earthquake location methods, site response corrections). It will in future be used to benchmark new methods and develop product-‐specific validation concepts.
  • European Archive of Historical Earthquake Data AHEAD (lead INGV): finalize the data exchange format for a more efficient data exchange among participating institutions, the central web service implementation, and its full inclusion in the common portal.
  • Improving services for earthquake parameter and earthquake observation information (lead EMSC): improve the earthquake information services by expanding the number of earthquake products, improve data quality checking and usability, diversify collection and dissemination mechanisms, increase services robustness for the community, and offer generic tools (e.g. generic smartphone app) for observatories to support development of their own services.

EMSC-Testimonies-WS
Testimonies – WS gives access to the intensities of felts reports collected at the EMSC via a web service and an interactive query search. Those development will be fully integrated to the Seismic Portal. This service is still under implementation and follows as closely FDSN-event standard.

EMSC-MT-WS
Moment Tensor - WS gives access to all moment tensor data available at the EMSC via a web service and an interactive query search on the Seismic Portal.
This service in now in active testing phase and accessible at the address: vigogne.emsc-csem.org/mtws/
