EFEHR | services for earthquake hazard and risk

Services initiated by EFEHR under NERA will be fully developed and integrated within EPOS. Services in hazard and risk are provided by a number of specialized nodes across Europe. Each listed institution leads the activities for the service node it is hosting, with support from partners as required. The overall integration of the service components and nodes and the interaction with the EPOS ICS is provided by ETH; the consortium of the EFEHR nodes and associated partner institutions assures overall governance.


Current activity in the EPOS-IP project:

EFEHR earthquake hazard platform (ETH): Host the common EFEHR access platform. Maintain, review and enhance collections of seismogenic source models and harmonized earthquake catalogues for hazard purposes for Europe. Test these model components against observations. Re-compute the harmonized European Seismic Hazard when warranted by new input data and models. Provide access to software, models, databases and best practice via the EFEHR web portal. Provide access to the other specialized nodes of EFEHR:

  • European Database of Seismogenic Faults EDSF (INGV): maintain, review, update and provide access up-to-­date fault information.
  • European Ground Motion Prediction Equations database (GFZ): maintain and update a region specific logic tree of suitable ground motion prediction equation equations, validate the GMPEs against strong motion data and integrating new intensity measures.
  • European geotechnical engineering information database and web services (AUTH): develop the Europe-­‐wide geotechnical, geological and site conditions inventory, collecting and harmonizing national/regional databases, including an initial web service to access the data.
  • Services for the analysis of strong motion recordings in buildings (KOERI): validation and improvement of tools for processing, analysis and interpretation of building/infrastructure weak and strong-­‐motion data to compute engineering demand parameters and evaluate the real structural conditions. Integration of building records with observed damage to calibrate fragility functions etc.
  • Earthquake risk (EUCENTRE): establish the necessary engineering requirements for seismic hazard products in a dialog between the ‘seismic hazard’ and ‘earthquake engineering’ communities. Provide access to existing exposure and vulnerability data, and work towards the harmonization of exposure and vulnerability models for European risk assessment for buildings and infrastructures. GEM will be an associated partner in these activities and will ensure the appropriate coordination and integration on a global level.
