The COSPAR 2018 Assembly took place at Pasadena, United States, last July from 14th to 22nd. In this event, which goal is to promote international cooperation in the pursuit of scientific research in space, Carine Bruyninx and Juliette Legrand, both EPOS TCS GNSS Data and Products members, attended by speaking about EPOS developments and contributions to Solid Earth Science researches.

C. Bruyninx approached “Monitoring of Permanent GNSS Networks used for Accessing the Terrestrial Reference Frame” in her presentation, and J. Legrand spoke about “Quality assessment of the EUREF Permanent Network multi-year position and velocity solution”.

C. Bruyninx explained the tools that the Royal Observatory of Belgium (ROB) is developing to manage permanent GNSS networks, such as the GNSS networks managed by EPOS or EUREF. “This includes the new GNSS station metadata management system M3G, which is already used today in EPOS and EUREF and guarantees the standardization of between both networks”, adds Bruyninx.

Multi-GNSS tracking networkShe also showed how ROB performs the monitoring of GNSS data today in the EUREF network. This activity is the basis of the future long-term monitoring of GNSS data that ROB will perform for the GNSS TCS in EPOS.

GNSS-component – Besides, she took the opportunity when speaking about metadata management system to introduce EPOS to that audience informing it will be operational in 2019. “European Scientific Research Infrastructure for Solid Earth Science provides open access to data and products as well as for visualization processing and analysis through one unique EPOS portal”, announced C. Bruyninx also explaining the GNSS-component (data portal, product portal and M3G).

Quality assessment – Juliette Legrand, by presenting “Quality assessment of the EUREF Permanent Network multi-year position and velocity solution”, stated that this GNSS solution is one of the EUREF products that will be provided to EPOS. “Even if this product has been primarily designed for reference frame maintenance, it has been also used for geodynamic studies since many years”, clarified her.

J. Legrand presented the solution and explained how it is updated on a 15-week basis. Besides, she showed the comparison of the solution with the IGS solution and the work done in order to perform a station classification.

About COSPAR – COSPAR was created in 1958 to promote international cooperation in the pursuit of scientific research in space. More fully known as the Committee on Space Research of the International Council of Scientific Unions, COSPAR was created with an emphasis on the exchange of results, information and opinions in space research.
