First preliminary results from 452 permanent European GNSS stations presented at ESC Malta

The main topic is always seismology at the General Assembly of the European Seismological Commission (GA ESC). This year, the 36th Assembly was held in Valletta, Malta, from September 2nd to the 7th , 2018. The event was organized by the Department of Geosciences of the University of Malta, and it brought a new approach: a presentation about the work done by EPOS TCS GNSS Data and Products.

Athanassios Ganas (NOA), an EPOS TCS GNSS member, introduced this TCS by presenting for the very first time the preliminary product which is the strain rate map of western Eurasia. “In this contribution, were presented preliminary results from 452 permanent European GNSS stations, operating until 2017 and processed at UGA-CNRS (Université Grenoble Alpes, Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique)”, says Ganas.

EPOS-TCS-GNSS-Data-and-Products-at-ESC-Malta.pngStrain rate field – According to him, to calculate the strain rate field, they used two open-source algorithms recommended by EPOS-IP, namely the VISR (Velocity Interpolation for Strain Rate) algorithm (introduced by Shen et al., 2015) and STIB (Strain Tensor from Inversion of Baselines), developed by Masson et al., (2014) as well as the SSPX software suite (Cardozo and Allmendinger, 2009).

The study revealed that the EPOS-based results reproduce the gross features of tectonic deformation in selected areas of Eurasia, Italy and Greece, such as NE-SW extension across the Apennines and N-S extension in Central Greece. “It is anticipated that the significant increase of GNSS data amount associated with the operational phase of EPOS in the forthcoming years will be of great value to perform an unprecedented, reliable strain rate computation over the Eurasian plate”, highlights Ganas.

This research entitled “Developments on the EPOS-IP Pan-European strain rate product” is co-authored by Athanassios Ganas, Vasilis Kapetanidis, Faramarz Nilfouroushan, Holger Steffen, Martin Lidberg, Aline Deprez, Anne Socquet, Andrea Walpersdorf, Nicola D'Agostino, Antonio Avallone, Juliette Legrand, Rui Fernandes, Eduard Nastase, Machiel Bos and Ambrus Kenyeres.

New generation of tools – Also representing EPOS TCS GNSS Data and Products, Eduard Nastase and Alexandra Muntean presented results obtained in 2018 following the implementation of the new generation of tools into GNSS permanent reference network data processing in help for a more accurate assessment of the Vrancea earthquakes impact.

“The involvement in EPOS-IP project as member of GNSS Data and Products Working Group helps us evolve in the same direction, test and implement GLASS software package for the dissemination of GNSS data and dedicated products (time-series, velocities and strain-rates – to be created using state-of-the-art methodologies) for a better understanding of different Solid Earth processes in European region”, states Nastase.
