EUROPEAN RESEARCH INFRASTRUCTURE ON SOLID EARTH

EPOS TCS GNSS Data and Products disseminated at EUREF 2018 Symposium

On the latest May 30th until June 1st, 2018, EPOS TCS GNSS Data and Products participated to the EUREF 2018 Symposium, which was hosted in Amsterdam, Netherlands. Therefore, to disseminate this Thematic Core Service, five presentations were given: EPOS TCS GNSS Thematic Core Service @ European Plate Observing System, Multi-GNSS Capability of the EUREF Permanent Tracking Network, ROB's GNSS Contribution to EPOS, EPN Multi-year Position/Velocity Solution, and GNSS Metadata Management and Distribution System (M3G).

GNSS @ EPOS – Rui Fernandes, coordinator for EPOS TCS GNSS Data and Products, had been chosen as a representative to speak about EPOS at EUREF Symposium. To leverage EPOS awareness, he started by reminding the audience that “EPOS is a long-term project for the integration of research infrastructures for Solid Science in Europe. Therefore, one of the three priority projects of European Commission within ESFRI”.

According to Fernandes, EPOS integrates the existing (and future) advanced European facilities into a single, distributed, sustainable infrastructure taking full advantage of new e-science opportunities. At the opportunity he also presented the EPOS timeline and accomplishments until nowadays.

His approach followed focusing on EPOS TCS GNSS Data and Products. He explained the added value of EPOS TCS GNSS Data and Products for GNSS community highlighting its sustainability within EPOS and pointing out the provision of software tools (GLASS). “Countries that join EPOS-ERIC commit to maintain their GNSS infrastructure integrated in EPOS (stations, operation) and DDSS (Data, Data products, Software & Services) Providers were chosen based on the commitment of the countries to sustain them on long-term (EPOS-ERIC operation)”, stated Fernandes.

Multi-GNSS capability – The oral presentation Multi-GNSS Capability of the EUREF Permanent Tracking Network (by C. Bruyninx, J. Legrand, A. Fabian, F. Roosbeek) showed that there are 324 stations in the EUREF Permanent Network (EPN), highlighting that 39 stations were added last year and that, since last symposium, five new stations were included. This report also presented the stations presently proposed to the EPN and why they are not included in the EPN yet. About the multi-GNSS tracking network, based on RINEX data, 7% track GPS-only, 40% track GPS+GLO and 53% track (at least) GPS+GLO+GAL.

Taking the opportunity, Carine Bruyninx showed results of the EPN multi-GNSS data quality monitoring using G-nut/Anubis (developed by Václavovic P. and Dousa J.) plus self-developed plotting scripts on top of Anubis. “We also got some lessons from data quality checks. For analysists, we recommend using RINEX 3 when available, even if only processing GPS+GLO. For station managers, we advise them to keep receiver firmware up-to-date, submit RINEX 2 and RINEX 3, favouring tracking Galileo above BeiDou, and check the EPN CB plots to monitor their data quality”, stated Bruyninx. She also explained the new GNSS metadata submission and validation system M3G, which is also used within EPOS and reminded the audience about the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR).

ROB's GNSS contribution to EPOS – The goal of ROB's GNSS Contribution to EPOS (by C. Bruyninx, A. Fabian, J. Legrand, E. Pottiaux, F. Roosbeek) presentation was to give an overview of how the Royal Observatory of Belgium (ROB) is presently involved in EPOS IP, how its plans to contribute to the operational phase of EPOS, and how these activities are linked with ROBs present EUREF activities. “We aim to demonstrate how ROB is heavily involved in the development of EPOS and plans to play an active role in EPOS once the infrastructure will be operational”, said Carine Bruyninx.

Showcasing the EPOS scenario, she explained that TCS GNSS Data and Products will become available at the EPOS main portal through an interface with two new GNSS gateways, one for GNSS data and one for GNSS products. Bruyninx presented examples of Belgian in-kind contributions provided by ROB to EPOS focusing on GNSS. The goal was also to demonstrate that like ROB, many agencies involved today in EUREF, can easily contribute to EPOS. Bruyninx also indicated that the management of station metadata, a new EPOS service, allows a unique submission of site log of stations belonging to several international GNSS networks leading to fully consistent site logs between EPOS and EPN.

EPN multi-year position/velocity solution – Juliette Legrand presented the new EPN multi-year position and velocity solution expressed in the IGS14, which will also be provided as a EUREF product to EPOS. She explained how the product was generated and how its quality is verified.

Management and distribution – GNSS Metadata Management and Distribution System (M3G) was a poster by A. Fabian, C. Bruyninx, J. Legrand presenting the new metadata management and distribution system for multiple GNSS networks that is used in EPOS and to which the EPN is presently migrating.

About EUREF – EUREF is the International Association of Geodesy (IAG) Reference Frame Sub-Commission for Europe. The Sub-Commission EUREF was founded in 1987 at the International Union of Geodesy and Geophysics (IUGG) General Assembly held in Vancouver. The scope of the symposium covers the EUREF activities, such as the realisation, maintenance, and usage of ETRS89, EVRS and the EUREF Permanent Network. More information at EUREF website.
