EPOS GNSS Data and Products had presented its activities at the EUREF 2017 Symposium, hold in Wroclaw, Poland, on May 17th to 19th, 2017, hosted at the Institute of Geodesy and Geoinformatics, Wroclaw University of Environmental and Life Sciences.
Rui Fernandes, coordinator for EPOS GNSS Data and Products, revealed the status of the EPOS-GNSS developments giving an explanation about the contribution of the GNSS TCS of EPOS-IP to manage GNSS data and associated products for Solid Earth at European scale. “By developing GLASS, which is a software package to manage, validate and distribute GNSS data and metadata and associated products, we expect to deliver data redundancy, data monitoring and independency”, stated Fernandes.
According to him, data redundancy comes from integration of existing physical repositories and robustness. Data monitoring, by controlling the data quality and independency.
This EUREF Symposium was also an opportunity for Carine Bruyninx, from ROB-Royal Observatory of Belgium and from EPOS GNSS Data and Products, to present the plan to integrate EUREF Permanent Network (EPN) stations in EPOS.
About EUREF data provision to EPOS, Bruyninx had asserted that it will require almost no effort from EPN stations to also contribute to EPOS. On the other hand, the contribution will generate more visibility of your station data and, consequently, more users.
“We also provide EPOS feedback on data usage and license (if not yet existing), and we encourage
all data providers to put a DOI on their data. All data providers to EPOS, also the EPN data
providers will have a representation in the EPOS data provider board which will have a
representation in EPOS GNSS Governance”, Bruyninx highlighted.
“Each country that will join EPOS will define its in-kind contribution to EPOS. If your stations are mentioned in this in-kind contribution, then your government could ensure national support for their long-term operation”, explained Bruyninx.
At his presentation, Andras Fabian, also involved in the development of EPOS GNSS Data and Products, spoke about the status of M3G which is the new system that will manage GNSS station meta-data within EPOS and EUREF and he announced the forthcoming functionalities.
“We will extend with more validation rules (to handle exceptions, to handle other networks
rules), enable functionalities such as save as draft and reset subsection, allow to upload site
pictures and to upload individual antenna calibration files. We will also add the new feature
to import/export format (GeodesyML/Json) and webservices to export/import from/to
external GNSS datasources”, asserted Andras Fabian.
About EUREF Symposium – The EUREF Symposium is the forum where the EUREF activities are discussed and the resolutions are taken. It has been organized every year since 1990. EUREF is the IAG Reference Frame Sub-Commission for Europe, integrated in the Sub-Commission 1.3, Regional Reference Frames, under Commission 1 - Reference Frames, following the implementation of the new IAG structure at the IUGG (International Union of Geodesy and Geophysics) General Assembly held in Sapporo, 2003. The Sub-Commission EUREF was founded in 1987 at the IUGG General Assembly held in Vancouver.
The scope of the symposium covers the definition, realization and maintenance of the European Reference Frame - the geodetic infrastructure for multinational projects requiring precise geo-referencing (e.g. three-dimensional and time dependent positioning, geodynamics, precise navigation, geo-information) - in close cooperation with the IAG components (Services, Commissions, and Inter-commission projects) and EuroGeographics, the consortium of the National Mapping Agencies (NMA) in Europe.
