On October the 30th, 2018 EPOS has become a European Research Infrastructure Consortium (ERIC) and thus a legal entity. The EPOS-ERIC Launch Ceremony of the Consortium has been organised yesterday, the 7th November 2018, at the Headquarter of the Italian Ministry of Education, University and Research (MIUR) in Rome (Italy) in the presence of the Vice-Minister for Education, University and Research Lorenzo Fioramonti, the Director General for Research and Innovation of the European Commission Jean-Eric Paquet, the President of the INGV Carlo Doglioni.

The EPOS Coordinator Massimo Cocco has described the EPOS infrastructure and highlighted the importance of sharing scientific data and products and developing services to facilitate open access and use of scientific data.

Currently 25 European countries are participating in the implementation of the EPOS research infrastructure that will manage the new multidisciplinary IT platform for open access to data and services for Earth sciences.

Of these 25 countries, 13 have already joined the European Consortium EPOS ERIC (updated at 8 November 2018), and more will be added in the coming months.

Italy also contributes to EPOS through a Joint Research Unit (JRU), coordinated by the INGV, in which several public research bodies (CNR, OGS, ISPRA), CINECA, the Eucentre Foundation and some universities (Napoli Federico II, Roma Tre, Genova and Trieste) participate.
